Dog Summer safety

During the summer months, it's essential to be mindful of the heat and take precautions to keep your dog comfortable and most important, safe. Dogs are susceptible to heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses, so it's crucial to follow these temperature guidelines:

1. Provide plenty of water: Always make sure your dog has access to cool, fresh, water. Hydration is essential in hot weather, just like it is for humans.
   
2. Grooming: Regular grooming can help your dog stay cool by removing excess fur and promoting airflow over their skin. However, avoid shaving certain breeds with double coats, as their fur provides insulation against both cold and heat.
3. Avoid midday walks:  1000 - 1600 is typically the hottest part of the day.  During these hours when temperatures are at their peak, avoid strenuous exercise or taking your dog for walks or limit your dog's outdoor exercise and playtime.  If you need to take your dog for a walk, try to stick to grassy or shaded areas. Asphalt and concrete can get scorching hot and burn your dog's paw pads.  As a basic ‘rule of paw’ Press your own barefoot or hand on the pavement for at least 7-8 seconds.  If the pavement feels too hot for your barefoot or hand, it is too hot for Fido’s.
   
4. Be cautious with water activities: While swimming can be a great way for dogs to cool off, not all dogs are good swimmers. Always supervise them around water and consider using a dog life jacket for added safety.
5. Watch for signs of heatstroke: Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. If you suspect heatstroke, seek immediate veterinary attention.

Remember that different dog breeds have varying tolerances to heat, with brachycephalic breeds (those with short snouts, like Bulldogs and Pugs) and senior dogs being more susceptible to heat-related issues.  I have first hand experienced a dog almost die of heatstroke and it is a core memory.  Adjust their activities accordingly during the summer months and always pay attention to your dog's behavior.
